Our House, written by the sellers

  1. 1. Why did you buy this house?

Location, location, location. First, the home is situated in the country. After that, it offered everything we had on our list. The brick veneer requires no maintenance, a two-acre corner lot is easy to keep up, a large shop, fenced-in backyard, dog run, playset, and the list goes on. We didn't feel we could find another home more suitable to our lifestyle.

    2. Why did you buy in this area?

We relocated to Charleston in 2011. Before then, we had lived most all of our lives in the country. And, as nice as Charleston is and the close surrounding areas are, they just didn't offer us the tranquility that comes with real country living. The peace and quiet of a late spring evening, listening to a whippoorwill sing is to be desired more than loud thumping radios and sirens.

    3. What are your favorite things about your house ?

That would be the large oak plank flooring that is in every room except the bedrooms and baths, along with the plantation shutters on each window in the home. Also, the enjoyment that comes from relaxing in the Family Room across from the open fireplace and the vaulted ceiling, that offers a spacious feel. There is approximately a 1500 square foot deck/concrete patio combination out the back door that offers a spacious area for outside entertainment and relaxation. A 4' x 5' BBQ pit is large enough to handle anything you would like to place on it. There is a massive 3 bay shop in the rear of the backyard. At 24' by 36', it affords room for any man as a private cave, sufficient for a car, boat and RV. The concrete floor is easily cleaned and will provide a mechanic the means of rolling around under vehicles during repairs. The shop exterior is Hardy Planks that will last for

decades. There is also a large playset under a live oak that has a slide board, swings, swinging bridge, treehouse, etc. that is perfect for children or grandchildren.

    4. What will you miss when you move ?

That is easy to answer, sitting on that massive front porch and enjoying the gorgeous giant live oaks in the front yard. When the weather permits, we eat our breakfast, lunch and supper on this porch. The front yard is covered in one large canopy of live oak branches. All limbs are draped with beautiful long strands of Spanish Moss that gently sway with a summer breeze.
Practically, every tree on the property has Spanish Moss that is a charming Low Country accent. The pleasure that one receives when resting outside with a glass of sweet tea on a warm summer day lacks comparison. A corner of the backyard has been dedicated to a vegetable garden for years. It yields enough food to allow for canning and freezing for winter meals.

    5. Have you done any improvements to it ?

We have painted each room in the home. Also, added additional insulation in the attic to assist with the heating and cooling bills. All water pipes in the attic were wrapped to prevent freezing. Various trim molding was installed in select rooms. The house was so perfect for us, that minimal improvements were necessary.

    6. Anything else you want to say about your house ?

The layout is perfect. The front door leads into a roomy foyer. From the foyer on either side are rooms that can be closed off by means of pocket doors. These rooms are so versatile. We use one as the formal dining room, since it is connected to the kitchen. The other room is used as a craft/sewing room but will work just as well as a private living room, study, office, playroom, sports center, media room, etc. The Kitchen has an eat-in

breakfast area that we use daily. The baths have slate tile floors. Passing through the foyer, you will enter the spacious family room. This area has a 13-foot vaulted ceiling with a brick-faced fireplace that reaches the ceiling. The Master bedroom and its bath is on one side of the home while there are two bedrooms with a single private bath at the opposite side of the house.

The adjoining two-bay garage provides extra room. Outside the garage is an oversized concrete pad for parking or washing cars and trucks.

The home is situated on a corner lot and the backside joins a 40- acre wooded pasture. Neighbors on both sides are blocked off by a row of trees mingled with small brush. The neighbor to the front is so far off the road that their home can't be seen. To be so public, our home is really a private spot.

    7. Tell us about your subdivision ?

The Quigley Farm Community is a POA. There are really no strict requirements and this property owner is asked to donate $200.00 a year to help maintain the dirt roads throughout. It is a nice neighborhood offering a closeness to your neighbors and yet at a distance that affords some privacy. Many people walk, jog and ride bicycles on the roads for exercise and enjoyment. There is a posted 15 MPH speed limit for the safety of children and pedestrians. It is a very safe area and there is a community watch.

    8. What do you like about ?

We like having our privacy and yet neighbors that are close enough if something goes wrong help can be gotten. Everyone is friendly. During storms, neighbors will check on each other and offer help if required.

    9. Is it a social neighborhood ?

Usually during Halloween all the children will gather with a few adults and walk through the community. Friends will associate at given times by invitation.

    10. What are neighbors like? They are all friendly neighbors. We will miss them greatly. Children are respectful. Pets are restrained and controlled.

    11. What’s your favorite place in the area for coffee/ breakfast/lunch/dinner ?

There are several local restaurants around Hollywood such as The Filling Station and Firehouse. Ravenel offers the Harvest Moon. We always enjoyed eating at one of the places on Edisto Beach Island, or picnicking at the State Park.

    12. How is the traffic in the morning/afternoon? Any tips to beat it ?

We are situated approximately 25 miles south of Charleston and 25 miles from Edisto Beach Island and the Edisto State Park. Going to work at Boeing in the mornings at about 5:30am, I could arrive in 35 minutes. Coming home at 3:00pm usually took 45 minutes or more. Most of our needs, including Dr. and groceries, are met in West Ashley. 30 to 45 minutes will get us anywhere we need to be. Mornings offer better traffic than the afternoon does.
